This unique, beautiful cabin is situated on 40 acres (approx. 17.5 hectares) of near-pristine rainforest on top of the Clarke Range west of Mackay, North Queensland, and adjacent to the Eungella National Park.
This unique, beautiful cabin is situated on 40 acres (approx. 17.5 hectares) of near-pristine rainforest on top of the Clarke Range west of Mackay, North Queensland, and adjacent to the Eungella National Park. The cabin consists of an L-shaped kitchen/dining/lounge area; bathroom/toilet shower, basin, toilet, laundry tubs); 2 bedrooms (first with french doors to patio overlooking rainforest & large stone birdbath; second with 2 sets of in-built double bunks). There is a large stone-faced fireplace in the lounge area, and an external wood box which can be accessed from inside the dwelling.

All materials are natural and/or pre-loved:- wooden kitchen cupboards and robes in both bedrooms; oregon bunks; quarry-tiled floors; wooden casement windows and doors; The large well-bagged cream mudbricks resemble sandstone blocks on the inside walls,and are mud & cement rendered on the outside walls. The cabin is built in loadbearing style, on cement foundations and was completed in 1987 with full council approval.

Water supplied by hydraulic ram (with auxiliary petrol pump) from the pure spring-fed stream in the rainforest. Lighting is by gas and pressure lamps; water heating & cooking by slow-combustion stove; refrigeration is gas. Gas bottles and firewood can be sourced in the local village). The stove, hot water service & refrigerator were newly installed in 1997.

Electricity is available with connection from the public utility traversing the property across the road. (Special written permission allowing for non-connection of electricity was obtained by the current owners). The telephone cable runs past the property's roadside boundary
should connection be desired. The property is fenced on the eastern boundary with the adjacent farm; the road forms the southern and western boundaries; a line of cement fenceposts marks the northern boundary within the rainforest.

The cabin is built in a small section of cleared regrowth-forest adjacent to the road (the only cleared area), with the rainforest directly in front of it. Also on the property are:- a 20 x 15 foot galvanised iron garage with cement floor; small car-port adjacent cabin; fibreglass water tank on tall stand; historic horse-drawn wool wagon mounted on blocks.

The rainforest contains some six signposted, brushed and flagged walks, and many plants indigenous to the area (eg 6 types of tree-fern; king orchids; cedar) as well as many varieties of fungi in season. Birdlife is prolific including the elusive Eungella honeyeater; coppery brush-tailed possums are prevalent and visit the cabin windowsill; you can also see platypus in the streams, large goannas and brush turkey mounds in the forest, leaf-tailed geckoes, and echidna (spiney anteaters) if lucky.

Mt. Dalrymple (second-highest in Queensland), Mt. David and Mt. William can be seen to the north-east from the property, with walks to the summits of the former two. Access to the wilderness area of Massey Gorge, for experienced hikers, is possible from Snake Road. All of these areas lie within the Eungella National Park.

The cabin has been let as tourism accommodation from 1987-1989 (when we owned the adjoining farm) and again from 1996 until recently, when the manager removed elsewhere. It has also been our holiday home since late 1989.

For sale is a half-share in the property for $AUS 55,000 ($US 31,000). The property is freehold and the title would be as 'tenants in common'. This means that either owner can sell his/her share at whatever price they choose. Annual land rates (approx. $AUS 900) and major repair costs would be shared. The 'new' co-owner would have virtual sole use of the property. The other co-owner, my ex-partner, resides in northern New South Wales and would only require use of the property for approx. 2 weeks per year. Philip built the cabin and is an irrigation engineer by trade and is willing to carry out any major repairs required to the cabin or water system.

I now reside in South Australia and am involved in new projects, so for practical reasons have reluctantly decided to sell my half-share in the property.

Included in the sale are all fixed assets, window curtains and light fittings, hydraulic ram and petrol pump, the log-splitter, the collapsible rotary clothesline, gas bottles, refrigerator and stove,the wool wagon, and all furniture except for a few items which belong to myself.
