Another 45 minutes' drive will see you to Torre, the highest point of Portugal and famed local ski resort.

Quinta Ceu do Norte is the last farm-house on a country road slowly winding into the woodlands further on: a perfect location for any home, offering protection all year round by not being isolated while guaranteeing privacy, space and phenomenal views.

Behind the quinta you will find the olive grove with its ancient trees, exuding an almost Old Testament atmosphere. The garden offers delicious figs, apples, quinces, cherries and various vines heavy with fruit for ready consumption and wine making. Spring brings excellent broad beans, and Summer comes with pumpkins, grapes and corn. In addition there appears to be a never-ending stream of bell-peppers, potatoes, onions, tomatoes, red peppers and more.

Cooking is a breeze when all you have to do is walk out and get what you need. You can work in your garden to your heart's content, of course, but we prefer to laze about and read while leaving the work in the capable hands of old SÃ© (short for JosÃ©), our good neighbour and old-time gardener of the Quinta, and his lovely wife. They will always ask you what you need when harvest time has come - how many litres of olive oil and wine for instance â€“ and will often bring your home-made jams and rolls. But don't try to convince them that you and your spouse do not need fifty fresh eggs or cannot eat your way through a sack of potatoes and onions every week â€“ just do what everybody else does: bring any surplus along to everyone you know and discover how your home's fresh produce is welcomed with open arms.
