Visitors to the area,which used to be called the Sun Coast, but is now called the Estoril Coast love the local villages with their typical houses as well as the large villas along the oceanfront. Cascais has been a very important place throughout Portugese history, but it was only a fishing village until King Luis I converted an old palace into his summer residence in the 1800's. It then became a vacation location for affluent Portuguese. Cascais is only about 20 minutes drive from Lisbon, and a few minutes from Estoril. A short distance away is Parede, which has become well recognized by the European medical community because of the therapeutic effect of the iodine-rich water, ideal for treating bone disorders. Two of Europe's best orthopedic hospitals are located here.

World class golf courses, marina,museums, castles, churches, forts, shopping, varied water sports, fishing, tennis courts, horse-back riding, plentiful restaurants and nightlife are all nearby. But, if you get one of those days that you want nothing more than to stay home and relax, just lounge around the pool or lie around indoors in air conditioned comfort.
